'UTOPIA' ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS DESIGN COMPETITION
organised by
Utopia Competition 2020 recognises outstanding and creative ideas that defined the future city through the implementation of the future technologies, materials, planning and organisations.
With the theme of ‘UTOPIA’, we have to present their ideas on the visions of our future imagined world. As ‘UTOPIA’ can be defined as an imagined place where everything is perfect, we have to show their own definition of ‘perfect’ place.
THE LAND OF CANAAN
Flipping through the history of Book of Egyptian where Moses brought the people out of Egypt, we, as architects, are ambitious to replay the history of bringing people out of dystopia by taking a brave re-imagination of form, space and order of our utopian city.
problem identified
Earth will become a dystopia as people expect that overpopulation will occur in 2100. There will be 10.9 billion people in the earth which is uninhabitable for human. During that time, we will be facing scarcity of natural resources and lack of space.
needs & wants
Human only have 4 basic needs which are food, water, air and habitat. Wants are wonderful before greed, will it be a healthy communism if we share things instead of owning it?
Instead of the demanding increase of surface area, the concept of surface area, the concept of unnecessary spaces are removed. Permanent or temporary? Owning of sharing? Moving or stationary? If overpopulation is real, how far is too far?

Grid system controls the mobility of Pod-house and formation of temporary.
A floating, 3D version of current grid system plus the form of 3D grid can alter depending on the on-demand usage o space.
To stay in the orbit, the Pod-house is controlled by the balance between their momentum and the gravity towards the center.
Artificial gravity will be generated due to centrifugal force. The gravity produce the pulling force form the projector.
The grid system is multi-level, allowing the movement vertically and horizontally.
ECO PODS
The ECO POD is designed as the combination of space for transportation and residential. There will be no space allocated for specific function, all activities are carried out in same place, different modes will be generated by smart furnitures and enhanced by VR technology.

spatial order
In order to overcome the problem of overpopulation in the future, spaces and resources should be fully utilised to achieve the goal of Utopia. We tend to create artificial layer at mid-stratosphere which is about 20-30km above the ground. To save space, all agriculture activities will be carried out on this layer. Only living factories will be placed on the ground which included pod-house factory, farm-to-house system and sea desalination factor. On-demand parametric urban planner will float above ground, pod houses can travel in both.
vision
The vision of Land of Canaan is a place of happy living where human's needs and wants are balanced. Taking into consideration of Dystopia (Overpopulation), Utopia, and the invasion of Artificial Intelligence, this land has implemented the concept of Pod-Homes (private space), On-demand Parametric urban Planner (temporary space) and Jireh Factory (permanent space), all of them are regulated by AI according to the demand order from the Big data. We hope to achieve Utopia by proposing On-demand space to solve the problem of overpopulation based in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
